I think the reason you have less problems is the people who own Cosworth’s now have more cash and are not trying to do everything on the cheap. They would rather it done correctly and will pay for it. As a result you don’t have to take on low profit stuff as much to fill up dead machine time. It’s the people that want stuff done that don’t want you to make a dollar that are the issue. You will in turn do it faster employing more Heath Robinson tactics to make a quid. Precision takes time because humans are fallible you have to give people doing precisions jobs time to second guess and recheck work and that costs money. People never factor the cost of having something done too quickly or cheaply.
Hey bro those landrovers are the biggest piles of crap world wide ther not worth putting tires on
If the new crank fails, then all the oem cranks are faulty. Why don't LR ditch them and update the design????
I had the misfortune to work for JLR when they were releasing the new Evoque at the time. Quality inspection dept were being bollocked for finding too many faults. “ let the cars go out, the dealers can sort them out”….. that was the typical statement from the idiots, also known as chargehands……… The occasional meeting for enthusing the workers, showed how low down the list JLR were in the world for reliability. Japs were ruling, still are ruling the quality world. I wouldn’t have a JLR product as a gift……….
I had to buy new disks for my SLK350 because I couldn't find anyone to cut the old ones - Now you tell me 🙂
Watch LR times for timing up those v6 diesels up correctly. There’s a pin location on the front of the block and the flex plate hole will lock after( there’s a fair amount of give on the flex plate bolt holes) also an alignment tool for the crank reluctor ring , line that up even a tad out and it won’t fire up.
LR Time has just rebuilt one of those
Really enjoying both of the channels, Have you ever watched Allen Millyard channel? At present he is rebuilding a Norton prototype, a 1.5litre V8 motor cycles, Enjoy
nice old machine I love them I bet you could not get one like it today, but do me a favour clean it once in a while and it will last you out, thanks for the video.
Really hope you are right and i am wrong and know improved procedures and storage charges helps but Karens will always be Karens, lots of head work this week fingers crossed its not the return of karens next week?
Those Wiseco pistons are works of art. Shame no one sees them when fitted 😂
Leyland used exhaust peak on some valve timing set ups ,just be aware the flywheel will normally be marked EP.
When you expose 'moaners' to the glare of public view, their usually fallacious complaints are seen for the dodgy nonsense they actually are, in my opinion.
Was the VW head another deliberate mistake, difficult to get the injectors in with the valve 😉
Nice little tool that disk/drum skimmer. Nice vids of the day to day working of a machine shop. More interesting than watching someone honing out a cylinder for the 100th time. Sure you've driven passed my local machine shop Hamlins Engineering been going for over 100 yrs. Service should always get better as you iron out issues in all areas. Keep up the good work 👍
I have had a few discs machined over the years and ALWAYS found that having them surface ground has ALWAYS been far superior to lathed. It may be ok for cast iron discs but when it comes to any other alloy steel then I definitely go for surface grind.
Interesting that Lee tasks the apprentice with the most demanding engine build in the place.
Lee, not to labour the point but, you and Isaac really need to watch LR time for the rebuild sequence. No-one doubts your professionalism guys that's why we love your channel but the quirks of this engine are major. You don't want any comeback from a disgruntled customer who will blame you for any problems on start up.
Don’t forget the crank pick up ring only goes on 1 way or it won’t start
Hi Lee, Love your channel and content but why don't you tidy up and keep your machine shop clean, it is the heart of your business and is always in sh1t order. Lovely job for a retired ex-engineer, a couple of morning a week, keep the machine clean of swarf and broom clean the floors.
I saw a disk lathe on marketplace the other day that mounted to the car itself. Basically looked like the cutting head of that amco. But there was no motor or obvious way of powering it. Otherwise I would've like to grab it. Kinda have a feeling it was just a cutting head that he got scammed into thinking was something it wasnt
Yo, moaning ist great too.
Seems like nothing but drama surrounds this guy, time to move on.
WARNING Lee. Watch LR Time re crank timing ring and pin for crank. You have been warned 😊
Nah, bit of tippex and a couple of drill bits, and you're good to go. Lol.
Couldn't you hone out the injectors ports and use larger " O" ring's? we used to get mobile brake mechanics, to come and do our rotors, and drums, you get some strange head's, thanks for sharing, all the best to yous and your loved ones
A torque converter is essentially a viscos fan, working off a “fan” plate spinning through oil, whose viscosity(the resistance of a fluid to a change in shape, or movement) is used as a means to cause the assembly to spin.
I tend to describe it as two desk fans facing each other
Back in early 90s I did a week's work experience at local brake shop, and think I spent half of that time machining a pallet load of brand new, but out of spec rotors from the local factory. I've never done it since.
It’s been a decade since I last cut a rotor and, you took me right back down memory lane. Thanks again Lee, and thank you for even just putting in a little tech to balance out your video. I don’t have an issue with the moaning or showing what’s coming in and out of the shop. The updates and projects are wonderful too, just please try to maintain a balance of everything and I will continue to catch every video. I know that I don’t matter in the grand scheme but I believe that a couple of other subscribers might feel similar to myself. And I’m from the other side of the Atlantic and I still stumbled upon your channel and continue to enjoy it
Moans: You could do a special offer. One free moan with every head job. Note, the moan would not be transferable or redeemable for cash.
Have you found that the newer brake discs have such small run-out tolerances that it makes them really iffy to resurface?
Less moaning could be because you are deleting the comments you don't like
👍👍
U can buy anti chatter straps for the discs, solid and vented
Given that you live in England, it wont be long before the weather gives you something to moan about :)
Love when a man shows everyone his new equipment. Great video.
Might be because its Friday but at 12:13 your pointing at the valves instead of the injector hole, other than that its another very interesting video
You really need to check out Christian at LR Time for the build and timing of that V6. He makes tools for setting the seals at the right depths and timing the engine correctly. You've never mentioned them or the fact many people on this channel have recommended them for you to watch
That landrover looks very similar to the PSA dw10 b
Hi Regarding the vw diesel head I have had plenty of time with all of the vw diesels. The first of there engines the 1.6 idi unit was a shim and bucket design and they never suffered any scuffing of the cam or lifters the next generation that was turbocharged had hydraulic lifters and then the trouble started cams and lifters would scuff not terribly but scuff they did then the first of the di units arrived still a similar design but the scuffing got worse and finally the pd unit the worst of the lot. I don't know what the vw common rail units are like I can only imagine no better
It cant be the hole that the torque convertor bolts too. I think you will find it's NOT TDC that it is timed at.
A moan please clean that lovley disc hub balancer its not been touched in years needs a good clean .ill go as far as get the sove ts grease ect ill come fo it. Hate neglected machines esp wen there rare .moan over love the channel both of them. Keep up the good work premises looking good your getting there
You have better customers.
Ideal
for oddball or discontinued stuff it might be a goer but discs and hubs are cheap as chips nowadays compared to machine shop prices
Anyone that knows vw heads properly knows that VW forbid the refacing, basically they use a cheap aluminium and use a surface hardening process, skim it and its gone...
In the 80's I worked in PNG. I had a Hi Lux come in with no brakes. The driver had worn the disc out to the point it was paper thin and crumpled. Lovely 3rd world.
Good video showing plenty of engineering, just one thing you may want to note is the views you had in the first hour, 1840 views but only 396 likes, surely the other 1400 plus viewers could of liked the video, its religious to like the video to help out the channel folks
Someone says its using wrong oil. I have done several with worn lobes that have always had PD oil. our local Euro Car parts were selling three kits a week. Also as you say getting the Injectors to seal correctly was a nightmare. we were told by a mechanic at VW they knew this and always told the customer it was abuse....
Don't want to cause concern but I did a v6 Lion the other day, with the cam pins in, that hole in the flexplate DOES line up with the locking tool, I'm not sure you can rely on tdc, many engines don't pin at tdc these days.
You have to cut both sides both sides of a dics at the same time to keep it parallel,
